The word Papaoutai is a word made up by Stromae, which phonetically is the same as “Papa, où t’es?”, which translates as “Daddy, where are you?”. Whilst the song is very popular, having over 420 million views on YouTube, the lyrics are incredibly moving.
This song has echoes of Van Haver’s own personal life, as his Rwandan father was murdered during the Genocide when he was only 9 years old. Stromae’s dual persona in the Tous Les Memes videoĪ particularly poignant track on Stromae’s second album, Papaoutai, tells the story of a little boy brought up without a stable father figure. He has a talent that few other artists possess he can see the world through many different eyes which exposes many different issues in society today. Through his music videos, he has played numerous challenging characters whether he is playing a woman, a little boy, or a drunkard, all of his representations are sincere and artistic.
In seeing both sides of the turbulent relationship as one person, we can see how Though it is not only gender that Stromae experiments with. Directed by Henry Scholfield, they use lighting and makeup to create two very realistic and believable characters, in which we can all recognise ourselves. In the video for the song Tous les m êmes, Stromae acts as both the man and woman in a relationship to challenge the stereotypes of how we treat those we love. Van havers obsession with women’s shoes has come to the forefront of this capsule, with the options of two designs of unisex ballet pump. Their first capsule collection sold out in three days, and the creative duo have just launched their forth collection in collaboration with shoe brand Repetto. The couple wanted to experiment with the characters that Stromae can portray, by limiting the gap between the genders and creating this specifically unisex range.
Stromae himself has spoken about his jealousy of women’s clothing, finding that men’s clothes are void of colour and eccentricity. In 2014, He and his wife, Coralie Barbier, launched the first line of their own brand of unisex clothing. Something that I find very interesting about the character of Stromae is that Van Haver is unafraid to experiment with gender roles and sexuality. “Stromae” is the word “Maestro” back to front- each element of his persona is cleverly thought out. Born Paul Van Haver, the musician created his stage name using a type of French slang called Verlan. However, it’s not only his lyrics that are clever even his alias, Stromae, is a play on words. It is this intricacy that makes Stromae’s music so poetic, in my opinion. It makes an interesting comparison to look at the complexity of love in this 1800s opera, and now two completely different narratives can be brought together. Based on the song L’amour est un oiseau rebelle, he corrupts the tune to create a hip hop song, even making use of the same first lines. Through Carmen, Stromae is also alluding to the opera of the same name, written by the French composer Georges Bizet. This phrase is also a play on words, as the “blue” represents the blue Twitter logo. Love has in his eyes become a show, something that appears on Instagram for reasons purely related to image and vanity. To be “blue” for someone is a Belgian idiom meaning “to be enamoured with someone” he is criticising how sites like Twitter and Facebook have made human interactions temporary and less significant, because everything lasts for 24 hours, or can be expressed in only 149 characters. Stromae describes how social media has spoiled the organic nature of human relationships. We are only “blue” for them for 48 hours.” His song Carmen, which criticises our societies obsession with social media and the increase of consumerism, is a good example of this.

One of the main reasons why Stromae is so talented is the complexity of his lyrics. He is an intelligent and popular songwriter who has worked with the likes of Will.I.Am, Lorde, and Kanye West in my opinion he is just the kind of artist that the music industry lacks. Despite his enormous success throughout the world, his music has never really launched in Anglophone countries, which I find surprising. His debut single, Alors on danse, was released in 2010, and has been number one in 12 European countries, and Stromae has won numerous awards across his two albums. Although practically unknown in the UK, Stromae is a Belgian musician who has known a huge international success.
